On a flightseeing tour, soar by the impressive Mt. Edgecombe and fly up among the mountains and glaciers. For a more immersive adventure, visit nearby hot springs —like Baranof Warm Springs, where you’ll find a public bath and natural hot springs accessible by a short hike. On a clear day in Anchorage, you can see the volcanic peaks of the Aleutians and the faint outlines of Denali before watching a dramatic sunset from your 15th-floor hotel room. And, if you really want to immerse yourself in the beauty of Alaska, you can book a flightseeing trip, offered in most destinations, to see the glaciers and mountain peaks up close. There are several choices when it comes to your itinerary's length of time, ranging anywhere from three to 18 days. Our 10-day Alaska cruise aboard the Norwegian Sun was a memorable experience with a few hiccups.
Day Alaska Highlights: Inside Passage from Vancouver
There are different activity levels depending on how active you want to be. A visit to Southeast Alaska is not complete without an introduction to the area’s original inhabitants. Their fascinating history and culture is one reason Ketchikan is such a special place to visit. Another important element of the town is the logging industry, which was one of the mainstays of the Ketchikan economy through the 1990’s.

The staff were friendly and always willing to help, making our journey even more enjoyable. All in all, we found it to be excellent value for money, adding to the overall comfort of our vacation. And on the Norwegian Sun, that journey is packed with amenities and dining options that cater to every taste and preference. Curious about when to book your own Alaska cruise for optimal weather?

The main cafeteria (Garden CafĂ©) was always SOOOO busy that it was very difficult to find an open table. And we were a party of 2, so I can only imagine if you needed a larger table how much more difficult it may be. The cafe does offer the widest variety of different cuisines, but the place kind of stressed me out. There is also the option to upgrade to the Premium Plus Drink Package which includes many higher-end liquors and wines for an additional $29 per day. So doing some light math, let’s say you start drinking in the early afternoon and have one drink per hour.

Along the way, you stop at waterfalls and other spectacular overlooks. One of our best value land tours for time-conscious guests offering an up close Denali experience, tour of Alaska’s largest city and moderate hotel properties. A comprehensive Alaska Denali program in only six days, complete with riverboat and railroad experiences as well as a preview of Denali’s incredible wilderness. Therefore, overall, the views certainly impressed us, but the boat is not exactly designed for sightseeing in chilly temperatures. And with this area being largely unused meant that passengers were disproportionately concentrated in other areas.
We’ve poured hours into selecting the best Alaska itinerary and are already planning our next escapade. No trip to Alaska is complete without a train ride up the White Pass Summit. Learn about the colorful history of the Klondike Gold Rush as your vintage railcar climbs through the mountains to the top of White Pass. From there, your journey continues to Fraser, British Columbia, where you'll board a motor coach headed for Skagway. Along the way, you'll enjoy dazzling views of Tormented Valley, Pitchfork Falls, and other natural features.

You don’t have to wait until your kids are more grown up or you have a ton of money saved to start traveling. She has been featured as an authority on several notable travel websites and is a member of the Family Travel Association (FTA), Midwest Travel Network, and TravMedia global media network. It is very laid back and overlooks the activities in the main atrium. Terminal 66 is literally right across the street (you can see the Encore directly outside the hotel windows!) and you simply walk there the morning of your cruise.
You'll stop off at a shoreline camp to enjoy a snack over an open fire. When you’re finished, you’ll go on a short walk through a dramatic old-growth forest. For those with a hefty bankroll, this might be the ultimate Alaska shore excursion.
In Juneau, for instance, you can get an outdoor experience with a relatively inexpensive trip to the nearby Mendenhall Glacier. It's just 12 miles from the cruise ship docks and reachable by bus or taxi. The bus will set you back an astounding $45 per person, round-trip, which I find an intolerable gouge (but … it is what it is).
Any pre-booked shore excursion tickets are placed in your room on this day. The musical performance Choir of Man was the headliner show while we were on our cruise. It plays 4 different times during the 7-day itinerary and requires reservations. Depending on which type of stateroom you’re staying in, you can make specialty dining and entertainment reservations 90 – 130 days in advance. For comparison purposes, we took a 7-day cruise on Norwegian Encore that featured 5 ports of call. We recently had the amazing opportunity to take a 7-day Alaska cruise aboard the Norwegian Encore.
First, you can check any luggage you don’t want to drag around the ship before your rooms are ready. Norwegian Cruise Line staff will place a tag on your bag with the correct room number to deliver to later. I would highly recommend the Norwegian Encore for an Alaska sailing as well as Alaska overall in terms of a once-in-a-lifetime family vacation experience. I suggest first going to Deck 6 to make all dining reservations (at Teppanyaki), then all showtime reservations (at The Social Comedy Club). There is more than 1 cruise terminal in Seattle, so it is important to know that the Norwegian Encore ports at Bell Street Cruise Terminal at Pier 66. Upon arrival, we were able to store our luggage at our hotel, Seattle Marriott Downtown, and walk around the city from there.
If you want the best weather July and August will provide warmer temperatures and typically sunnier weather. But overall, the weather in Alaska can be rather wet and cloudy many days out of the year. Topsiders Bar & Grill pretty much just had pool grub, like burgers and hot dogs. On a warm summer day, this might hit the spot, but we weren’t really impressed with the quality of food offered here. You also get unlimited still & sparkling bottled water, plus all Starbucks® coffee & specialty drinks included in the premium drink package. Which could be beneficial if you plan to get specialty coffees and bottled water daily aboard.
Also, in May and June, you need an additional $15 king salmon stamp. If you catch a fish, you can have it packaged and shipped home for an additional fee, though your catch will not be permitted back onboard the ship. You are hauled up a mountain in a 4x4, geared up with a harness, gloves and a helmet, and with the direction of trained guides are sent to glide down a mountain on a zipline that runs between tree-top platforms. Once you land, your guide will take you on a dogsled ride over the snow-covered glacier and describe the 1,000-mile Iditarod race from Anchorage to Nome. Explore Alaska as the mountain climbers do with an overnight stay in the quaint community of Talkeetna.
